The idea of this program is to encourage and acknowledge participation in Community Service.
Community Service is any form of participation in a voluntary capacity that aids areas of your community. This could include:
School Service
You can count time towards Community Service if you assist in areas of the School during your own time and not as part of a subject activity eg helping with drama (lighting, backstage, front of house), music (moving instruments, setting up/clearing away, attending sessions that are not School related), sport (setting up/clearing away, time keeping), School functions (meeting and greeting, serving refreshments) and other similar activities. Hours will be allocated at the discretion of the supervising staff member.
Fund Raising
Each House has a charity or charities for which it collects funds. The Community Service Committee organises a number of charitable activities throughout the year – Oxfam Walk against Want, Clean Up Australia Day, 40 Hour Famine…. Participation is counted towards Community Service.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Service component of each level can be included.
Local Community Service
This covers all voluntary work in areas outside the School. These could include helping within your local church community, visiting nursing homes, working with the disabled/homeless, helping elderly neighbours, dog walking… The list could be endless. It is important that you have your parent’s permission before you undertake any voluntary work and that the person in charge fills out the relevant information in your logbook.
You will receive a ‘Participation Pack’ that will consist of a Log Book and a Reflection Journal. You are to note down the hours that are undertaken in community service in your logbook, making sure that you get your supervisor to sign it. Mrs John, a Community Services Prefects, your Head of House or Tutor may ask to see these during the term so make sure that they are kept up to date. Once you think that you have the required number of hours to receive a certificate you must take your logbook to Level 3, BBC.
To receive acknowledgement at the BRONZE level you will need to have completed 25 hours of Community Service and this can include School Service.
To receive acknowledgement at the SILVER level you will need to have completed 50 hours of Community Service and this must involve a minimum of 10 hours service other than School Service. A School pocket is awarded once Silver is reached.
To receive acknowledgement at the GOLD level you will need to have completed 100 hours of Community Service and this must involve a minimum of 50 hours service other than School Service.
It is important that you take this program seriously – there are no material rewards as such – just acknowledgement of your participation. By being part of this program you will develop an understanding of and respect for the values of others. Make the most of it.
You will be allocated a ‘mentor’ who will help you as well as supervise your progress. Each House has a Year 9 and a Year 12 SACS Community Service representative who will meet regularly with participants.
If you have any questions regarding this program please contact Student Services, Level 3, BBC.
